In the midst of George Zimmerman’s verdict, various organization, especially in the black community, have taken arms in stopping “Stand Your Ground” legislation from passing in any more states.
Since Florida became the first state to pass an explicit stand your ground law, more than 30 others have passed some version of it, with the help of a group called the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), a organization that promotes conservative bills. Here’s a 2012 map of stand your ground laws nationwide
The Ohio Legislative Black Caucus is the first Legislative Caucus to take a step forward from amongst the crowd and propose a solution to the issues that plagued the Trayvon Martin case.
“HB 203 was introduced in the House on June 11th and, if passed, will expand the circumstances under which a person has no duty to retreat before using lethal force in self-defense. This bill is nearly identical to Florida’s Stand Your Ground Law, which recently led to George Zimmerman being found not guilty of any crimes in the fatal shooting of Trayvon Martin.” – See more at: http://www.ohiohouse.gov/alicia-reece/press/olbc-denounces-ohio-gops-stand-your-ground-proposal
